How to avoid the NIGHTMARE of missing a room or angle as a real estate photographer.

No one wants to send the dreaded text or make the apologetic phone call to explain that they missed a closet sized bathroom. Follow these simple steps to help avoid that fate.

Communication

At the beginning of the shoot before you take a single image, ask the realtor if there are any angles or special features of the home that they were hoping to capture.

This keeps you from missing the following.

  • Panic Rooms

  • Custom features of the home you may have glanced over

  • Something the homeowner wanted photographed in particular (Happy homeowners = happy realtors)

Distraction

It is easy to get distracted when you have an outgoing and friendly realtor that wants to chat. Try to keep the small talk to a minimum and focus on the task at hand.

When someone calls you for your opinion from across the house avoid the temptation to carry your camera to them. Leave it where you were so it will help you remember where you left off so you can stick to your rotation. See section below for more information on rotation.

Doors

No matter how confident you are that a door is just a closet, always always always check it before moving on.

Rotation

I like to choose a clockwise or counter clockwise rotation when shooting a home. I always start at the entryway and choose a direction from there. For the large spaces like living rooms I will continue with that same rotation. If you need to adjust something in a room leave your camera where you left off. It will help you remember where you are in your rotation. (The image below is a sample rotation)
